I doubt seriously I am the first person to say it but I believe it. There is no worst known than the unknown. For those of you who have had a doctor tell you “I don’t know what is wrong” you know what I mean. In business it is the same. The unknowns are the worst. As someone starting a business try to eliminate the unknowns as much as possible. Here are a few ways to do this:
- Create a quarterly plan that not only lists what, but who, when and why
- Eliminate non-commital responses. When working with employees, ask for a commitment and hold them to it. The same with business partners. Don’t ask for something next week, ask for something by Thursday at 1:00pm
- Clarify what you will do by stating what you will not do. Often stating what you will not do takes you a whole level deeper in the discussion. It might just generate more business.
- When you hire someone new, give them a list of what you expect from them in the first 30 days, the second 30 days, the third 30 days etc. Make sure you hold them to it.
In summary most of the above can be sumarized as have specific, measurable goals and hold people to them. Beyond getting the work done, you will ease the level of stress in your life.
