There is a great post from SK Murphy on B2B startup opportunities. In it he lists four areas to focus on
- Find a critical business function being done in Excel and provide an alternative web app.
- Find a “business within a business” and automate it with modern technology.
- Provide a modern satellite system to augment and integrate with an existing enterprise monster.
- Provide a separate business unit with everything they need.
All four of these areas a ripe for new business ideas. One locally owned startup, VolunteerLocal, leveraged the Excel problem in creating their new offering. Volunteer organizations were tracking everything on spreadsheets (poorly at best) and needed a much better way to manage their volunteer staffs. You can check out Volunteer Local here.
