Andy Drish wrote a chapter for our book How Business Gets Done: Words of Wisdom by Central Iowa Experts on networking. The person kind, not the computer kind. He provided a number of great tips and ideas on how to build your network. The one that sticks out the most to me as I think about recent networking meetings is this: “Bring Something to the Table”.
As Andy states, “A relationship will continue only if both parties see themselves benefiting from the relationship at a future date.” When building your network think about what value you can add.
A recent networking meeting I had resulted in me learning of a new resource I had no idea existed. The person who provided the information almost did not mention the resource as she assumed I already knew about it. Boy am I glad she spoke up.
